The sebaceous or oil glands in the body naturally produce sebum which keeps the skin lubricated. The skin becomes dry when adequate sebum is not produced, resulting in sensitive skin. The skin is unable to hold moisture and hence becomes parched and dry. Especially after washing, the skin could become tight and stretched; and may also crack in some places. The skin around the eyes and cheeks may become flaky and chapped.
Skin tends to get dry especially during the winter season. Genetic factors could also play a part in this condition. Diet plays an important role in the appearance of the hair and skin. Therefore a poor diet, especially deficiencies of vitamin A and B could lead to the skin becoming dry. Other factors that could cause dry skin are prolonged exposure to the sun, chemicals, use of harsh cosmetics and soaps with too much chemical content in them may also lead to dry skin. Certain skin conditions too may cause dryness of the skin, such as eczema, psoriasis, seborrhea and dermatitis. Medications could also have side effects, one which could be dry skin. Thyroid imbalances may also be a factor.
Dry skin requires care and nourishment and there are various natural remedies that you can try to ensure that your skin remains free from dryness. It is important to moisturize your skin regularly and you can do so the natural way by using honey. Honey possesses many health benefits, one of which is that it heals the skin and moisturizes it. It also helps to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. Honey also has anti-bacterial properties and as such keeps the skin healthy and free from infection. Another natural moisturizing agent is yogurt, which can also be applied to the skin to remove dryness. You could also mix oatmeal and honey and use this on the skin as gentle scrub to get rid of dead cells. Olive oil is another essential natural product which has many uses and can be taken internally or even applied externally. If you suffer from dry skin, you may also need to improve on your diet. Intake of nuts and oily fish such as salmon and mackerel ensure that your body gets the necessary oils that help to keep the skin hydrated. Avoid using soap on the skin as it is extremely drying. Instead you may use oatmeal flour mixed with aloe vera gel. A useful facial pack for dry skin can be made with one egg yolk, a tablespoon of mayonnaise and a tablespoon of honey. This will help to soften and soothe the skin, eliminating the dryness.
