April 1, 2010 — Binge eaters can help themselves eat less for up to a year by participating in a 12-week therapy program, new research indicates.

The research, which produced two studies, shows that a majority of people participating in talk therapy sessions had stopped bingeing at the end of the program.

Those participants not only lost weight but saved money because they spent less on dietary supplements and weight loss programs, according to the second study.

Talk Therapy for Binge Eating

The program consisted of getting participants to read the self-help book Overcoming Binge Eating, by Christopher Fairburn, MD, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Oxford, and then taking part in a 12-week course in which counselors explained strategies.

Researchers enrolled 123 members of the Kaiser Permanente health plan in Oregon and Southwest Washington. More than 90% were women, and the average age was 37.

Half of the participants were asked to read the book and then attend eight therapy sessions over a 12-week period. The other half did not participate and served as a comparison group.

Researchers found that:

After 12 weeks, 63.5 % of participants had stopped bingeing, compared to 28.3% who didn’t take part.

After six months, 74.5 % of participants said they’d abstained from bingeing, vs. 44.1% in the comparison group.

After a year, 64.2% of participants were binge free, compared to 44.6 % in the comparison group.

All participants were asked to provide information about their binge-eating episodes, how often they missed work, and how often they were less productive on the job.

They also were asked how much they spent on health care, weight loss programs, and weight loss supplements.

Researchers also report that:

Average total costs were $447 less in the therapy group.

Total costs of the therapy group were $3,670 per year, per person, compared to $4,098 in the comparison group.

Binge Eating: New Diagnosis?

“People who binge eat more than other people do during a short period of time and they lose control of their eating during these episodes,” Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, PhD, a professor of psychology at Wesleyan University and lead author of the study focusing on cognitive therapy, says in a news release. “Our studies show that recurrent binge eating can be successfully treated with a brief, easily administered program, and that’s great news for patients and their providers.”

The researchers say the American Psychiatric Association has recommended that binge eating be recognized as an eating disorder like bulimia and anorexia. The new diagnosis, they say, may focus more attention on bingeing and how best to treat it.

In addition, the new designation could influence how insurers cover treatment and influence the number of people diagnosed.

“While program results are promising, we highly encourage anyone who has problems with binge eating to consult with their doctors to make sure this program is right for them,” says Lynn DeBar, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Human Research.

Both studies are published in the April issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

In September, PostRank launched its Analytics service, which allows website owners to track data about how their visitors are interacting with their content, both on their site and across social media channels, and how that data correlates to the site’s raw traffic. The service tracks data on a large number of social media platforms, such as Twitter, Digg, Delicious, and FriendFeed (though not yet Facebook).

Now PostRank has launched an Analytics Tour page that allows site owners and marketers to get a snapshot of that same data over the past 30 days on any site.

Although intended as a marketing vehicle for their more robust, paid PostRank Analytics service, the Tour page can be looked at as something like Compete for engagement data rather than web traffic. Marketers and website owners will find the new, free service very useful for tracking competitors and comparing engagement across sites to figure out where to put the most marketing muscle.

The service graphs total on-site and off-site engagement over the past 30 days, as well as the distribution of where engagement is taking place. You can also see what type of engagement is most popular with each site. Web comic XKCD, for example, sees 100 percent of its engagement off-site (the comic doesn’t allow on-site commenting), and gets more audience interaction on TwitterTwitter

and Reddit than on DiggDigg

and DeliciousDelicious

.

In addition to the new Tour page, PostRank also integrated the Tour’s view of the Analytics dashboard into their popular free WordPress plugin. That means the updated plugin will give WordPressWordPress

publishers social engagement rankings for each of their posts as well as a snapshot of engagement data for the blog as a whole.

The title of this video post might get me in trouble because it might be a little bit misleading; but by purchasing “established” INDUSTRY RELATED websites and setting up a permanent 301 redirect to your main domain, you can quickly build authority and link equity. Enjoy the video!

For those of you who would rather read than watch the video, here is the recap.

This video is about a question that a few of us at SEO.com have received lately. The question is about purchasing websites and 301 redirecting those websites into your main domain to increase search engine rankings and increase link equity for your overall domain.

I’ve mapped out a website about snowboards. Your money site is where you are selling snowboards which is the home page of your domain. You then have your category or sub pages where you go into detail with each brand of snowboards like Burton Snowboards, K2 Snowboards, and Sims Snowboards.

I want to discuss the concept of purchasing brand new domains for the purpose of 301 redirecting those to your site to increase search engine rankings. For instance, I want to purchase a site about Burton Snowboards (www.burton-snowboard-reviews-by-greg.com), a site about snowboard tune ups (www.the-best-snowboard-tune-up-tips-from-greg.com), a site about snowboard boots, and a site about snowboard bindings. Each of these are all brand new sites that your purchased through a domain registrar like GoDaddy.

The question is, If I buy these domains and I permanent 301 redirect them to my main site, will that help boost my rankings? The answer is no. It’s not going to help you whatsoever with your search engine rankings.

This strategy can help you when the sites have been on the internet for awhile, have age, content and back links coming into to them from other external websites. This builds up the reputation and link equity of each of the sites. At that point, this becomes a valuable strategy. For instance, you have site A, or the site about Burton Snowboards that has 800 links coming into it. If you are buying this site solely for the purpose of building links to your money site, you would take that site and 301 redirect it to the home page of your website, thus passing through the 800 back links to your website. (If you didn’t notice in the video, yes, I said client links and looked away because there was a loud noise coming from the SEO floor.) This will help you because you are building up your link equity and the overall reputation of your website.

If you want to purchase the domains and keep the community that is already functioning, continue to work on the site and funnel the established link equity to your website with strategically placed anchor text links pointing to your main website.

Where the sub pages come into play is if site D, or the site about snowboard bindings, has sub pages about Burton Snowboards, K2 Snowboards, and Sims Snowboards and the sub pages have deep links coming into them, you will not want to take those sub pages and 301 redirect them to your home page; instead, 301 redirect them to the related sub pages on your main site. This will pass the appropriate anchor text and link authority to the right pages on your website and help those pages to rank for their keywords.

In conclusion, do not buy brand new websites in hopes to 301 redirect them to your website to achieve higher rankings. If you are going to pursue this strategy, you will want to purchase already established websites that have trust, authority and links coming into them and then 301 redirect.

Clean Up Blackheads

December 9, 2009

Those tiny little black dots on your nose and cheeks can be a real pain and can make your skin look dull or dirty.

But squeezing them can cause scarring and skin damage. So here are a few tips and home remedies to help you get rid of those nasty black little specs.

What exactly is a blackhead?

Blackheads are actually open comedones. This simply means a zit with no skin over it. Those whitehead zits in your skin are closed comedones. The blackheads are pores with a wider than normal opening; which get plugged up with dead skin cells or sebum, an oil your skin secretes.

When the pore gets clogged, it still continues to secrete oil which is why the pimple or blackhead continues to grow. The black color actually comes from oxidation of the dead skin cells and oil meeting the air.

Blackheads do not only appear on your face, but also on any area with a large number of sebaceous glands such as your back and your chest.

Although popping them may seem like a quick and easy solution, it can actually harm your skin and cause more blackheads by squeezing bacteria and pore clogging gunk deeper into your skin. Here are some home remedies to eliminate them from your life without having to go crab man on your face.

Begin by using an oatmeal or almond face mask. Simply mix together a soft paste using either fine oatmeal or almond powder with rosewater. If you find the paste is not sticky enough, mix in a small amount of honey. Then simply dampen your face with a steaming towel and rub the mixture on. Let it stand for 15 minutes and rinse.

Once a day for a week rub bitter guard on your face. This will peel them right out. For stubborn blackheads, add 1 teaspoon of Epsom salt and 3 drops of iodine to ¼ cup of boiling water. Once cool enough to use, dab onto the trouble spots with a cotton ball. This will loosen the blackhead enough to be gently popped out.

Gently dab a cotton ball in lemon juice and apply it to the blackheads 3 times a day. It will dry up the blackheads. The only caution is that the lemon juice may irritate or dry out the skin.

Begin by washing your skin gently with an exfoliating wash to remove any dead skin or oil. Then steam your skin with boiling water or extremely hot tap water (steam; do not stick your face in the water). This will open the pores. Next, apply a clay or seaweed clay mask to absorb the oil in the skin. Leave it on for ten minutes and then rinse with warm water. Pat dry.

The eyebrows are the most highlighted and accentuated part of our face. They have more of an impact on the face than people may assume to be. And one of the easiest way to make your face look well groomed without any kind of make-up is to arch your brows perfectly. Arching your eyebrows needs to be done with ample of care. Is you over pluck the hairs then it may destroy your good looks. And once the hairs are over plucked then it takes months to grow back. Arching your eyebrows may seem complicated, but follow these easy steps and you’ll be there in no time.

First and foremost step for arching your brows is to determine the shape for your brow. The shape of your brow depends upon the shape of your eyes. If your eyes are small then thinner brows would accentuate your face. If your eyes are big then your brows should be thick.

Next comes the shaping part. You need to locate the place where your brow should end. For that take an eye shadow brush and hold it parallel to your nose. Begin from the place where the brush meets your brow. To find the end of your brow, expand the brush obliquely from your nostril, following the outside edge of your brush toward the brow. Where the inside edge of your brush hits is where the brow should end.

Now the third step is to shape your brow. So, begin tweezing your hair. Begin tweezing from the inner side of the brow.

For giving an arch tweeze the hair above the pupil of the eye.

Continue tweezing along the brow as it narrows down towards the end.

Black Skin Care Facts and Myths

There are so many myths that need to be dispelled about the skin of people of color. Here we discuss a few of the myths, and provide some tips to explain what you can do to protect and maintain your skin and hair.

Myth 1: Black skin can soak up exposure to the sun without causing any short or long term damage.

The Facts: While it is true that the pigment in black skin protects it from the sun, the UV rays can still cause damage to our skin. While we are less likely to get deadly skin cancers than our lighter skinned counterparts, they do occur. And because we have bought into the myth that black people don’t get skin cancer, we are less likely to be screened, and get a later diagnosis and treatment. In fact, some melanomas are much more deadly for people of color.

Myth 2: Black skin has all the moisture and oil it needs naturally, so there is no need for a moisturizer.

The Facts: Some black men and women have what would be called oily skin, because it often has more and larger sebaceous (oil) glands. While the skin may appear shiny or oily, this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t require a moisturizer.

Myth 3: Natural hair needs less care than relaxed hair.

The Facts: It is true that chemical relaxing does break down the structure of your hair in order to straighten it. Without proper application of the chemicals, or conditioning and protection from styling heat, the hair can become extremely fragile and prone to breakage. It is similarly important to treat hair in its natural state with the same amount of tender loving care. Keep your natural hair washed and conditioned. Make sure you’re using the right leave-in products in order to lock moisture in. It is also a good idea to use a wider toothed comb on natural hair to prevent tearing, tangling and breakage.

Myth 4: You can wash a permanent relaxer out of your hair.

The Facts: A relaxer changes the texture of the hair permanently. The only way to rid yourself of a perm is to let it grow out. Depending on how much new growth you have at the roots, you may want to cut your hair to the new growth, and wear a short hair style. Or you can trim away at the ends until your hair grows out. Many women wear braids, extensions or locks while they patiently wait for their perm to grow out.

Myth 5: Black don’t crack.

The Facts: The idea that black skin does not get wrinkled because of its level of pigment is absolutely a myth. While it may not be as prominent as with white skin or very fair skin of color, black women do get fine lines, smile lines and crow’s feet. That’s why it is important to take good care of skin while you are young, and be just as vigilant as you age. Keeping your insides hydrated by drinking water, and keeping the skin cleansed, exfoliated and moisturized is really important to maintaining its appearance.

Myth 6: The new procedures are not for women of color.

The Facts: Procedures designed to keep skin looking its best are great options for women of color. In my practice we see women of all ethnicities come in for Botox, fillers, collagen injections and microdermabrasion. Some procedures, such as laser treatments, can scar or cause hyperpigmentation to skin. So ask your dermatologist what treatments are best for your skin.

For anyone of any skin tone, it is vitally important to take the time to examine your body for new growths such as moles. Pay attention to any moles or scars that change color or size. Also check between your fingers and toes. Report any suspicious growths or changes to your dermatologist right away.

Also keep in mind that eating healthy is an important part of having great looking skin and hair. We often don’t get enough of the essential vitamins and nutrients we need to have strong healthy nails, hair and glowing skin. A vitamin designed to provide nutrients to the skin, hair and nails, along with your multivitamin, may be just what the dermatologist ordered.

Dec. 14, 2009 — If you look young for your age, chances are you’ll live longer than if you’re haggard and appear worn out, new research indicates.

A team of researchers led by Kaare Christensen, DMSc, from the University of Southern Demark studied photographs and data on 1,826 Danish twins aged 70 or older who’d undergone physical and cognitive tests.

The study is published in the Christmas issue of bmj.com.

The facial photographs of the twins were evaluated by 20 female geriatric nurses aged 25-46, 10 male student teachers aged 22-37, and 11 women aged 70-87.

The assessors rated the perceived age by looking at pictures of the subjects’ faces. They didn’t know the age range of the twins, and each twin had his or her age assessed on different days.

Death records were used to track the survival of the twins over a seven-year period.

The researchers found that perceived age was significantly associated with survival and life span, even after adjusting for chronological age, sex, and the environment in which each of the twins grew up.

Perceived age, the researchers say, adjusted for chronological age and sex, also correlated with physical and cognitive functioning, as well as length of leukocyte telomeres – chromosome tips on DNA of people’s white blood cells.

Shorter telomere length is associated with a ?host of diseases related to aging and lifestyle factors and has been shown to be associated with mortality,? the researchers write.

The bigger the difference in perceived age within a twin pair, the more likely it was that the twin who looked older died first, the authors say.

The sex, age, and professional background of the assessors made no difference in any of the results.

Basing perceived age on facial photographs is thought to be a robust biomarker of aging that predicts survival in people 70 and over and correlates with important functional and molecular age-related characteristics, the authors conclude.

The data came from the Longitudinal Study of Aging Danish Twins, which was begun in 1995, with assessments every two years up to 2005.

Summer Skin Care Tips and Advice

During summer, if you have to go out in the hot sun, think twice. This is because the hot sun may cause irritation to your skin. It may also result in inflammation or infection of the skin.

The problem will be greater if you already have any skin infection. You may become restless in the scorching sun and irritability may take over. So, when you have to go out in the hot summer sun, take effective measures to protect your skin. Here are some tips that could help you protect your skin in the hot summer:

Sunscreen lotion:

These lotions protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays. Apply these lotions half an hour before you go out. These lotions are available in various SPF value factors. It is advisable that using a lotion with a value factor of at least 15 would be appropriate during the hot summer. Look for this number on the label.

Lip Balm:

During summer, the lips may become dry. Use a good quality lip balm, so that the moisture of the lip is maintained, and they are also kept free from irritation.

Herbal bath:

Add a little milk to water, and wash your skin with this mixture. Another herbal method is to mix a few linden blossoms, rose petals, some peppermint leaves and chamomile into hot water. After about an hour, wipe your face with cotton. Then dip a cheese cloth into this mixture, and keep it on your skin for about twenty minutes. This keeps your skin tender, even during the height of summer. It has no side effects.

Moisturizer:

During summer, it is always safe to use a moisturizer. Irrespective of whether you have dry, oily or normal skin, you should use a moisturizer. Another important feature of moisturizer is that it protects your skin in all weather conditions, be it summer or winter. Apply a moisturizer that suits your skin condition.

Exfoliate and Drink water:

Many commercial products are available for exfoliation. Get enough sleep, and drink plenty of water. Take food containing lot of fruits and vegetables, because they help to keep the skin glowing, even during hot summer season.

Use an umbrella:

Prevention is better than the cure. As often as possible, avoid direct exposure to the sun during the hot summer season. For this, use an umbrella. It protects your scalp and your skin also.

Most participants in a recent series of American and German focus groups said their oily facial skin was both emotionally and socially disruptive, making them feel unattractive, self conscious, embarrassed, irritated and frustrated. The results of the focus group study were reported in the October 2008 of Health and Quality of Life Outcomes.

Up to 75 percent of teenagers and many older adults say they have oily skin, a common condition affecting both men and women, typically between puberty and about 60 years of age. But despite its prevalence, says Joshua Fox, M.D., a leading dermatologist, founder of Advanced Dermatology PC, and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology, “oily skin can usually be managed by adding just a few simple steps to one’s daily skincare regimen.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, genetics and hormones are the key factors contributing to oily skin. “The good news,” Dr. Fox says, “is that despite popular opinion, diet has little, if anything, to do with whether or not you have oily skin.” He explains that in oily skin, the sebaceous glands, located deep within the skin, produce too much oil, especially on the face, neck, chest, head and back. “While some oil is needed for the health of your skin and hair, too much oil can make skin and hair look greasy and dirty; it makes pores look large, and promotes pimples, blackheads and other blemishes.”

“Oil production can be stimulated by hormones, so anything that causes hormones to fluctuate can cause skin to become more oily,” Dr. Fox says, adding that for women, that means that more oil tends to be produced during puberty, at the start of each menstrual cycle and during pregnancy and perimenopause. In addition, oil production in men or women can be stimulated by any physical or emotional situation that causes hormone swings.

“Separately, humidity, hot weather, sun, exercise and other environmental conditions, and even some cosmetics, can make things worse,” he says. Dr. Fox says there are several basic steps people with oily skin should do daily to help reduce the shine, grease and discomfort caused by oily skin.

1. “Make sure to keep your skin clean. Dr. Fox recommends using warm water and gentle soap or a non-soap cleanser no more than twice a day.

2. Use only water-based or oil-free cosmetics (noncomidogenic)

3. Use only products designed for oily skin.

4. Consider using different cleansers during the summer and winter. Hot, humid weather requires a heavier cleanser, while cool dry air calls for a moisturizing product.

5. Consider prescription and non prescription astringents, face washes, masks and other degreasing agents which can help.

If these simple steps don’t provide the results you seek, Dr. Fox suggests using a glycolic or salicylic acid product with a light oil-free moisturizer containing a sunscreen. “For even more dramatic results, anyone suffering from oily skin should visit his or her dermatologist, who knows their specific skin and its challenges and can create a personalized skincare plan to reduce oil and maintain healthy-looking skin,” Dr. Fox says. “A dermatologist can also offer you topical or oral prescription treatments such as Retin A, Differin, Tazorac, Benzoyl Peroxide or Accutane that help reduce the oil or can provide laser treatments for especially stubborn oily skin which shrinks the sebaceous glands.”

About Dr. Fox: Joshua L. Fox, M.D., F.A.A.D., earned his medical degree from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He completed an internship at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, followed by a four-year dermatology residency at the New York University School of Medicine. A Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dr. Fox is a leading authority in the field of dermatology, with an expertise in skin cancer, cosmetic surgery and laser procedures. He is the founder and director of Advanced Dermatology, P.C. of New York and New Jersey and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery.

About Advanced Dermatology and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery: A premier medical practice with seven locations throughout Long Island, Queens, Manhattan and New Jersey, the center provides the widest range of medical, laser and cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery services in the New York Metropolitan area.
